Expanding our mission to include "articulating a role for the arts" in community development, C.L.A. initiated The Arts and Community Development Project in 1993. Since inception we have provided more than 550 young people with summer and year round job experiences in the arts.
SPOTLIGHT ON THE ARTS
A program of the Arts and Community Development Project at California Lawyers for the Arts
Spotlight on the Arts provides deserving teens who are interested in the arts with paid summer internships, workshops on conflict resolution, college preparation and career development, "backstage" tours of arts facilities, and field trips to live cultural events. In San Francisco youth have interned at diverse arts organizations including Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, A.C.T. Costume Shop, Cartoon Art Museum, Zaccho Dance Theatre and Streetside Stories. In Los Angeles we have placed interns at Grand Performances, LA Stage Alliance, Robey Theatre, and Shakespeare Festival LA. Tours of arts facilities and excursions to cultural events have included the New Conservatory Theatre, African American Art and Culture Complex, San Francisco Mime Troupe and Stern Grove. Graduates of Spotlight may be eligible to continue their internships for up to 10 hours per week during the school year.
