Dispute Resolution Techniques for People in Arts and Entertainment

with Dorit Cypis

Program Description:

As an artist, writer, musician or creative person, have you ever found yourself in conflict with collaborators, producers, or other people involved in your project?  Do you wish that you knew how to manage the situation better to reduce the level of anger and frustration on both sides of the conflict?  Join CLA and mediator and artist Dorit Cypis for a program covering some practical tools to assess and respond to the situation.  Cypis will discuss how the nature of conflict is affected by relationships--who we are to ourselves and who we are to others and how identity beliefs form bias habits that contribute to conflicts.  This hands-on workshop will also cover some practical strategies to minimize the harm caused by these identity issues in the context of conflicts over creative projects.

Presenter:

Dorit Cypis is an award winning artist, innovative professional mediator and educator. Her work exploring identity and social relations has been presented at major museums in North America and Europe. In 2007 she founded Foreign Exchanges to offer conflict engagement and transformation services through trainings, consultation and dialogue formats. With a belief that conflict between people is also within people, Dorit innovatively draws skills from art, communication and mediation to build bridges across personal and cultural differences.  Her clients come from the arts, civic culture and education. Dorit is a founding member of Mediators Beyond Borders, served as Chair of the Middle East Initiative to partner with Neve Shalom Wahat al Salam/Israel 2009, was past Leader of the MBB Los Angeles Chapter, has initiated Jewish/Arab Public Dialogues At Levantine Cultural Center, and has worked with Occupy LA as roving mediator. Dorit is a published writer and has taught on the complexity of cultural and personal difference throughout the USA, Canada, Israel, Holland and France. She earned a Masters of Fine Art, California Institute for the Arts, and Masters of Dispute Resolution, Pepperdine University.

These workshops are made possible, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission; and The City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs. Additional support provided by the California Arts Council.
