AB-5, which was intended to add “clarity” to the independent contractor rules, has done just the opposite. Many employers, including those in the arts community, are struggling to make sense of this legislation. Join labor and employment attorney Bryan Hawkins as he discusses the historical context of the AB-5 legislation (including how the Dynamex and Borello decisions are applied) and walks the audience through how to apply the many exemptions the legislation contains.

This workshop is being presented in collaboration with the Sacramento Office of Arts and Culture

Bryan Hawkins is a litigator practicing in Stoel Rives, LLP’s Labor and Employment Groupwith extensive jury and bench-trial experience. He represents employers in employment-related litigation in court and before administrative agencies such as the Department of Fair Employment and Housing and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. His practice also involves counseling employers on employment-related issues, including handbooks and policies. Bryan also provides counseling on labor issues, such as advising employers on how to effectively respond to union organizing campaigns, negotiate collective bargaining agreements, and manage the employer/union relationship. In addition, Bryan’s practice includes litigating complex commercial disputes in areas such as antitrust, business torts, and real estate.
