This three-part series will take a comprehensive look at the many facets of managing the legal aspects of a visual artist's profession. Each session will examine crucial legal issues central to protecting an artist's creative investments. Visual Artists of all mediums are encouraged to attend.

Part 1: Copyright: Gaining and Keeping Protection

This webinar will discuss copyright and its role in safeguarding the intellectual property of visual artists and creators. Our speaker will examine several employment categories that may have an impact on intellectual property, such as works produced for hire, employee relationships, and independent contractor classification.

This seminar will also cover fair use, as well as how to navigate copyright infringement claims, and will touch on copyright licensing and permissions.

April 5th, 6-7:30pm

Contracts and agreements play a central role in the administrative responsibilities of working artists. There are several types of contracts that visual artists may encounter whether in the context of receiving commissions, funding, or when selling artwork. This webinar will cover some of the fundamental elements of effective contracts and licensing agreements.

June 7th, 6-730pm

This webinar will cover agreements specific to working with galleries and highlight key considerations such as the duration of a partnership, insurance, compensation and artist/gallery obligations. Our speaker will also briefly cover public and private art commissions and what artists should know when engaging in each.

 MCLE credit will require an additional fee plus the cost of general registration. At checkout you will be prompted to add on the MCLE fee to your registration.

About our Speaker

M.J. Bogatin is a founding member of the San Francisco Bay Area law firm of Bogatin, Corman & Gold. For over 40 years, his practice has emphasized art, entertainment and intellectual property law.He is the Co-Author with Tad Crawford of the LEGAL GUIDE FOR THE VISUAL ARTIST (Allworth Press, 2022). His visual arts practice includes representation of artists with large public art commissions and moral rights litigation claims. He has served as President of the Board of California Lawyers for the Arts and chairs the organization's legal referral committee. He also serves as General Counsel to many nonprofit arts organizations. He maintained a bLAWg on visual art licensing for several years, and regularly serves as a featured speaker on artists’ legal rights for both live audiences and online webcasts.
