Legal Basics for Creative Businesses

Program description:

Join CLA and attorney Scott Hervey to learn about some of the basic legal issues involved in starting and operating a small business. Topics to be discussed include:

  • Selecting an appropriate business structure, including pitfalls to avoid in connection with each type of entity;

  • Employees and independent contractors;

  • Intellectual property issues involved in forming a new entity, including naming the business and protecting its copyrights; and

  • Protecting yourself with enforceable contracts.

An in-depth discussion of trademark issues facing new companies will follow at Branding for Creative Businesses on Tuesday, May 19.


Presenter:

Scott Hervey, Esq. is an entertainment, intellectual property and business attorney who works with companies in a variety of different industries.  He represents traditional entertainment and digital media companies, technology companies, restaurateurs, wine and spirit companies and all varieties of brand driven enterprises, in licensing, mergers and acquisitions, financings, and other general business transactions.  Scott is a professor of entertainment law at UC Davis School of Law (King Hall) and serves on the board of directors of the Hollywood Radio and Television Society (HRTS).
